Hike, Snorel and Swim at the Spectacular Cachoeira Serra Azul Waterfall in Nobres

The Cachoeira Serra Azul waterfall is located 24 kilometers from the Village of Bom Jardim in Nobres, Mato Grosso. It is without doubt one of the main draws of the region, and should be on the short list of places to see for anyone planning to visit Mato Grosso.  The waterfall is located on the 5700 hectare Santo Antonio Ranch, which was recently purchased by the commercial trade association Serviço Social de Comercio (SESC) and placed in conservation status.  From the reception area the access to the waterfall is by a 700 meter trail which would make for an easy hike if it were not for the 470 stairs that you have to ascend and descend before arriving at the Cachoeira Serra Azul waterfall.

At the reception area you will receive your snorkeling equipment receiving before ascending the trail. There is a lookout point at the top where your local guide will outfit you with a mandatory life jacket and sandals before descending to the Cachoeira Serra Azul waterfall.  The scene is breathtaking: A waterfall of over 45 meters cascades into a crystalline blue pool over 6 meters deep that is carved into the side of a mountain. From the deck you will be greeted by an amiable school of Pirautanga fishes (Brycon microleps) who are elated to introduce you to their underwater paradise. The snorkeling lasts about an hour, a sufficient time to explore the waterfall & the pool, as well as, of course, interact with the fishes and explore a fissure in the cliff where a hot spring flows into the pool.

The trip must be purchased through an authorized travel agency and accompanied by a local guide. Transportation is not included in the price of the voucher and the local guide often meets in the village and needs transportation as well.  Those who prefer a bilingual guide & transportation should consider one of our package tours departing from Cuiabá.  The local guide may be accompanying several independent groups; however, the guide interpreter will accompany your group exclusively. The use sun tan lotion and insect repellent is prohibited during the snorkeling.  In addition to swimming attire, we recommend the use of a tennis shoe or light hiking boot for the trail.  You may want to wear la loose fitting long sleeve shirt and comfortable long pants to protect against insects.  There is a changing area and bathrooms at the reception area.  While there is presently no restaurant on the premises, mineral water and soft drinks can be purchased at the reception area.  On the weekends and Brazilian holidays, for an additional cost, there is also a zip line that descends 700 meters from the top of the trail back to the reception area above the treetops.  While perfectly safe, it is not for the faint of heart.
